practiced Vipassana meditation since 1985 in Sri Lanka (Godwin Samararatne), as well as in Burma (Sayadaw U Pandita). He received a Yoga teacher training at the Yoga Institute Santacruz, Bombay. Training in Psychosynthesis with Sascha Dönges, Basel. MBSR teacher training in Dublin, Ireland. He teaches Vipassana and Metta Retreats in Austria and other european countries. Since 2022 he is the spiritual guide of Meditation Center Piandeiciliegi, Italy.
Hannes was born in December 1960 in Vienna. Already with age 19 he travelled to Burma, Thailand, as well as making the overland journey to India and Nepal, spurn by an interest for asian cultures
and religions. The early forceful death of his father was a catalyst for him to turn to Buddhism and to search for authentic teachers.
It was in 1985 in Sri Lanka, that he met the first inspiring teachers and so he stayed there for 3 months in retreat , before meeting his main teacher for the years to come, Mr. Godwin
Samararatne, an internationally wellknown lay teacher of that time. The next years he spent most of the time with Godwin at the Meditation Center Nilambe, Sri Lanka.
In between he did a half year Yoga teacher training at Yoga Institute Santacruz, in Bombay, which enabled him in the following years to support his life and to work independently, allowing
ongoing Dharma practice including regular long retreats.
His interest in eastern and western approaches of working with the mind lead him to do a 3-year training in Pychosynthesis (founded by Robeto Assagioli) in Switzerland.
In the 90´s he was already involved in the Theravada Group at the Buddhist Center Vienna and was responsible for inviting and organizing visits of well known Buddhist masters. It was in 1996,
that Godwin Samararatne encouraged him to teach and share the Dhamma.
At some point, however, he felt the urge to still go deeper in his practice and to find the way that finally leads beyond suffering. This brought him to the USA, doing several months of retreats
with Joseph Goldstein and other well known American teachers. At some point, Joseph Goldstein suggested him to go to Burma and to practice with Sayadaw U Pandita, who then became his main
teacher. It was the personal guidance of Sayadaw U Pandita and Ven. Vivekananda in several retreats up to 6 months who supported him to fulfill the practice to the satisfaction of both
teachers. In 2004 Sayadaw U Pandita asked him to teach in the tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw and assigned him to assist Sayadaw U Pannathami and Sayadaw U Vivekananda at several retreats in
Poland, Hungary and Italy.
Beside teaching he still takes time for his own retreat practice between 1 and 3 months every year. In 2012 he ordained temporarily as a Bhikkhu in Myanmar.
Hannes Huber spent altogether more than 5 years in Retreat (which consists of continuous sitting and walking meditation from early morning to late evening and complete silence, except for the
personal interview with the teacher).
Hannes has meditation teaching experience since 1996, and teaches full time since 2004. His concern is to share the approach of the lineage of the Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw and Sayadaw U Pandita of
Burma, yet in a way that is suitable and helpful for people of western culture.
The development and integration of loving kindness (metta) and compassion (karuna), as embodied by his first teacher Godwin, takes also an important role in Hannes´ approach to teaching.
Hannes´ further concern is to convey dharma practice not only in the framework of intensive retreats, but to show and offer ways to integrate dharma practice in all areas of daily life. Thus he
has offered since 2010 so called "daily life practice weeks", which until now have happened on a regular basis in three different towns, as well as online. He occasionally teaches MBSR and MSC
courses. In Germany he trains future MBSR teachers in regard to insight meditation and the Buddhist roots of MBSR.
So far Hannes has been teaching almost 200 Vipassana (and a few Metta-) Retreats in nine different countries. Since 2022 he is the spiritual director of Vipassana Meditation Center Pian dei Ciliegi in Italy.
Hannes Huber lives with his wife Bianca (a dharma practitioner as well) near Vienna, if they are not in Pian dei Ciliegi or elsewhere.
